Training Program

The training program meets four times a year for a full day of lecture and study in Bowen Theory. The student is expected to gain knowledge of Bowen Theory and apply it both personally and professionally. The course is organized so that the student is responsible for his/her own learning through the study of his/her family and reading. Over time the student is expected to demonstrate the integration of Bowen Theory in personal functioning. The Faculty are individuals knowledgeable in Bowen Theory, who strive to apply the theory in their own lives. They will serve as consultants as the students require. Individual consultation will be available upon request.

The student is expected to attend each session and actively participate in each session (seminar) in its entirety. Each student will be assigned a consultant. On the first day of the course (seminar), each student is expected to present his/her family diagram in order to begin the study of Bowen Theory. There will also be the opportunity to present clinical cases and organizational systems for consultation.

This program was approved by the National Association of Social Workers – Tennessee Chapter (Provider Number:

NASWTN 2024-0136) for 30.0 continuing education units.

The tuition is non-refundable. The fee, $2,000 for 2024-2025 is payable upon acceptance to the course. Tuition includes group consultations (Supervision) at each meeting plus four individual sessions with a Faculty member. If the student wishes additional supervision with the consultant, it is the student’s responsibility to arrange the time and fee with the assigned consultant. Scholarships are available.

There are three textbooks: The primary textbook is Family Evaluation by Michael E. Kerr and Murray Bowen, Bowen Family Systems Theory by Daniel V. Papero, and The Eight Concepts of Bowen Theory by Roberta Gilbert, each of which can be ordered through Amazon.com via our website. Each student is expected to purchase the books and read the assignments posted on the Curriculum Syllabus.
